Educating Pension Fund Trustees Since 2017

The National Public Pension Fund Association (NPPFA) was founded in 2017 but developed its roots in a state specific not-for-profit umbrella organization representing police and fire defined benefit retirement funds in 1985. As the demand grew for prudent stewardship over governmental deferred compensation 457(b) plans, the NPPFA was established to offer training, services, and support to pension trustees and their organizations.

Since the inception of the program, the plan has saved participants over $19 million in fees.

The NPPFA services member needs by:

  • Holding educational seminars
  • Producing trustee and investment handbooks
  • Making referrals for professional services as required

NPPFA’s The Wise Choice for Public Employees 457(b) Deferred Compensation Plan was formed to incorporate best practice plan design and pricing to help public sector employees, regardless of size, achieve greater retirement plan account balances. This plan was built by pooling the buying power of hundreds of local units of government in the United States with a single vendor. NPPFA believes no employee should have less money at retirement just because he or she works for an employer that does not have the size to negotiate large case pricing. The two largest 457 vendors have multiple pricing schemes whereas the NPPFA 457(b) plan offers a single price. This single price has come down as the co-op has increased in size.

NPPFA’s The Wise Choice for Public Employees 457(b) Deferred Compensation Plan was formed to incorporate best practice plan design and pricing to help public sector employees, regardless of size, achieve greater retirement plan account balances.

By pooling the buying power of local units of government, the NPPFA has been able to negotiate a program that normally would require a single employer to have $50 million in available assets for deposit into the plan before this fee structure would be available. Within the core funds, the NPPFA Wise Choice Plan provides total delivered pricing from 0.00% – 1.53% annually. The plan also includes a Fixed/Stable Value Fund without the typical liquidity restrictions.

Since the inception of the program, the plan has saved participants over $19 million in fees. Currently, there are over 180 units of government participating in the co-op with over $400 million in managed assets.

The NPPFA Board of Directors hired NPPFA Benefits to initially create the plan and then subsequently contracted NPPFA Benefits to exclusively provide the Education, Sales, and Marketing for the NPPFA Wise Choice for Public Employees 457(b) Plan, the Retirement Healthcare Funding Plan, and the Wise Choice for Educators 403(b)/457(b) Plan.
